DNCB Outing No. 2023-32A to Campbell Valley Regional Park & Fergus Watershed Biodiversity Preserve, August 8, 2023

Eleven birders met at Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley – Lidia, Lorna, Mike, Annette (visiting from Nanaimo), Roger. Lee, John, Jacquie, Chris, Margaret and Terry.

Many Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees were looking for handouts. We were glad that the usual pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks appeared. Also seen were Song Sparrows, Robins, Towhees, Juncos, Crows, Swainson’s Thrush, Bewick’s Wren and a Great Blue Heron. Heard but not seen were Yellow Warblers, Western Wood-Pewees and Willow Flycatchers. We saw and heard many Douglas Squirrels along the way. There were also Eastern Gray Squirrels and the rarer Townsend’s Chipmunk. There were American Bullfrogs in the pond but no insects on this cool cloudy morning.

After returning to our cars, most of us decided to drive to Surrey’s new Fergus Watershed Biodiversity Preserve on 168th Street at 14th Avenue. A Red-tailed Hawk was perched on a powerline tower. The lovely one kilometer loop – partly on boardwalk – seemed quite birdy. In the trees were Cedar Waxwings, American Goldfinches, House Finches, Northern Flickers, Song Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, Savannah Sparrows, and at least 2 Mourning Doves. From the bridge we could see an old beaver dam and beaver lodge and Mallards. We heard Willow Flycatchers. A few other unidentified birds puzzled us. A dragonfly posed for a photo but a Mourning Cloak butterfly would not pose. We saw the Commemorative Stone that will be dedicated to Jude and Al Grass in September. This is a great new destination for our outings.
