7 Delta Nats met at Brydon Lagoon in Langley – Terry, Chris, Jim, Teresa, Julie, Lorna, Dawne.
We could not see into the overgrown pond below the parking area. The lagoon usually has a variety of duck species but today they were all Mallards and Wood Ducks – along with Canada Geese and a Pied-billed Grebe. There was no sign of the Green Heron that was seen here a few days ago. We walked anti-clockwise around the lagoon and got a great view of a Pileated Woodpecker. We also got good looks at Cedar Waxwings, Song Sparrows, Black-capped Chickadees and House Sparrows. Barn Swallows and Tree Swallows zipped over the lagoon. A female Common Yellowthroat sat still for a few minutes, a Yellow Warbler was catching insects and a Steller’s Jay flew over.
Next we walked the loop around the wooded area where we added Anna’s Hummingbirds, House Finches, Goldfinches, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Chestnut-backed Chickadees and lots of Common Eastern Bumble Bees. A detour into the woods failed to find any owls. In the far distance we saw a Kestrel moving between too tall snags and a Flicker landed below it. A dog walker said he had seen 2 coyotes but we did not see them.
We added a well camouflaged Great Blue Heron in a tree above the Nicomekl River. The loop through Hi Knoll Park did not add any birds but it was a very pleasant walk.
