Ten birders spent a pleasant morning wandering through the UBC Botanical Garden – Jonathan, Terry, Don, Lidia, Dottie, Bob, Lee, Lorna, Deems and Lorraine.

As Lee said, the variety of plants and trees more than made up for the lack of birds seen. In fact, they were likely responsible for the lack of birds seen. We did see American Goldfinch, House Finch, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Swainson’s Thrush, Anna’s & Rufous Hummingbird, Common Raven, Red-winged Blackbird, American Robin, European Starling, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow, Northern Flicker, Spotted Towhee, Black-capped Chickadee, Brown-headed Cowbird, and Bushtit.

We also heard Western Tanager, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Purple Finch, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Warbling Vireo. There was also a nice selection of bumble bees and other insects.

  1. Is DNS still following its rule of disallowing people from joining field trips if they are unvaccinated?

    1. Hi, Tony, long time no see! I miss your group shots from your “ground cam”.
I don’t think vaccinations are an issue any more. Most of us are vaccinated at least 4 times, we probably have herd immunity! Ken Borrie

      1. If you are sure about admitting unvaccinated person, I would like to join you time to time, and be advised when the next trips come up. But I advise you to check with your management how it is, to avoid being turned out after I arrive.

  2. Hope you received the email from Terry Carr, who is our coordinator for DNCB Outings. Add your name & contact info to the end of the list on the spreadsheet at “Pre-register here” link (right column, top).

This spreadsheet also lists upcoming trips, which you can sign up for (up to Sep 12 so far). Meeting times (usually 8 am) are also on the spreadsheet. These Outings are also listed at https://dncb.wordpress.com/2023-dncb-outings/. Regards, Ken Borrie
