PHOTO: Barred Owl by Jonathan Mwenifumbo…….

14 DNCBers met at Alasksen National Wildlife Area on Westham Island. There were Mallards and Wood Ducks in the slough and Flickers, Robins, Cowbirds and Collared-Doves were perched above it. Near the buildings were Barn Swallows, Cedar Waxwings, Goldfinches, House Sparrows, Song Sparrows, House Finches, Chickadees and Anna’s Hummingbirds.
At the beginning of the loop along the river we were entertained by a singing Yellow Warbler that remained unusually visible on a treetop. We heard but did not see many birds on the loop until the end where we watched a Bewick’s Wren having a dust bath on the path. Then near the barn Jonathan spotted a Barred Owl perched in a tree. We added Bushtits and more of the same birds on our way to the wild flower garden where we had a variety of insects.
