Topic: Gardening for Biodiversity with Native Plants links to YouTube video of this Presentation

This presentation will explore how we can transform our properties into pollinator-friendly landscapes that help promote biodiversity in our region. We will learn about pollinator-plant relationships and how to select plants best suited for your space. If you have ever wondered about the benefits of growing native plants, this is a presentation you will not want to miss.

Growing up on Vancouver Island, Jill’s passion for native plants has been guided by her deep love of local ecology. She is a Certified Horticultural Technician who also holds a BA in Environmental Studies and Anthropology from the University of Victoria. She has been able to combine her passion and knowledge of native plants at Satinflower Nurseries, where she coordinates plant and seed orders and community projects in Metchosin. She also helps to manage the nursery’s native seed field in Cobble Hill. Satinflower Nurseries aims to inspire and empower people to restore and conserve nature by providing native plants, seeds, education, and expertise. The nursery is specialized in the restoration and ecology of Garry oak ecosystems and meadowscaping.

DNS Crew

This presentation delivers a sweeping (photographic) account of 8 DNS members’ birding adventures through Colombia, starting in the high-altitude capital city of Bogota and its unique surrounding vegetation and ending in the endemic hotspot of Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast.

Thea Beckman (MSc) is a science-educated professional writer with a life-long passion for birding and travel. Although she was born in Vancouver, Thea grew up in South Africa, where she birded extensively with her mother from age 5. She has traveled and birded around Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and now North, South, and Central America.

Today, she works as the Director of Marketing of an education technology company based in the States, but the fires of devotion to birding and travel continue to burn bright!
