The Delta Naturalists Society is passionate about preserving the biodiversity and natural beauty of the Fraser River Delta; and while we are an organization of volunteers, we rely upon our members’ annual dues and donations to keep the heartbeat of our initiatives strong. Every dollar contributed to the Delta Naturalists Society makes a meaningful impact, helping us to:
- Protect wildlife habitats through various initiatives, such as our Birds and Biodiversity committee.
- Promote education through our suite of Delta nature brochures and other Nature Resources, as well as through event volunteering through hands-on nature displays and monthly presentations, which we disseminate through our social media channels (Facebook and YouTube).
- Advocate for environmentally responsible policies and practices (see Delta Initiatives). Your support allows us to amplify our voice and influence positive change at the local and regional levels.
- Create an inclusive and engaged society of like-minded people with a shared interest in nature through regular outings and many other social events.

Tom Bearss bursary
In 2020, the Delta Naturalists Society lost a giant within our organization: Tom Bearss, DNS President who, for years, led birdwatching walks into the Fraser River Delta and surrounds. His amiable persona and humorous blog writing drew in dozens of enthusiasts from far and wide. Sadly, Tom passed away in April 2020 but while he left behind a void we could never fill, his family ensured that his legacy will be felt for generations to come with the Tom Bearss bursary.
The Tom Bearss bursary was established through a collaboration between the Delta Naturalists Society, UBC, and the Bearss family to support students specializing in environmental and nature studies. Thanks to generous donations, the substantial size of the Tom Bearss Bursary means the Fund is endowed and will continue to support students in perpetuity, without further donations required.
