Delta Naturalists Outing to Terra Nova, February 25, 2026

PHOTO: Pied-billed Grebes by Colin Huggett…..

Our group met up at Terra Nova Park on River Road in Richmond. We were Bruce, Nicki, Lindly, Brian, Louise, Colin, Stephanie, Anne, Jeff and new member Ron.

Scanning the foreshore we saw hundreds of gulls and several species of waterfowl but once the group was together we crossed the street and headed for the pond area where we heard several Marsh Wrens calling and heard and saw several Red-winged Blackbirds and two Pied-billed Grebes.

Moving towards the garden plots we heard 2 Virginia Rails calling to each other. Many of the usual song birds were present including Song Sparrows, lots of Spotted Towhees, American Robins and Golden-crowned Sparrows. Moving beyond the garden plots we scanned the tall conifers for owls but couldn’t find any. We did see some Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the bushes and heard and saw Bewick’s Wrens.

Heading to the larger pond things were quiet and we soon popped back onto the main dyke trail and as we neared the parking lot saw a large flock of Red-breasted Mergansers, many hundreds of Snow Geese, a large flock of Dunlin in the distance and a number of Trumpeter Swans in the foreshore. A Common Raven was calling at the parking lot bringing our bird count to a respectable 45 species.
