Eight Delta Nats met at the end of 64th Street on a beautiful sunny morning – Terry, Noreen, David, Lindly, Teresa, Dorothy, Ron, Margaretha. There were Yellow-rumped Warblers in the trees by the cars and all along the dyke. We soon added Eagles, Golden-crowned Sparrows, Robins, Song Sparrows and Starlings. An Anna’s Hummingbird put on a display in the sunshine, and a Lincoln’s Sparrow posed for photos. Flickers and a Northern Harrier flew by. At the pond were American and Eurasian Wigeon, Mallards, Shovelers, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Northern Pintails, Coots and a Pied-billed Grebe.
At the shore were large flocks of Dunlin along with perched Bald Eagles with snow-capped Mt Baker in the distance. In the fields were well camouflaged Killdeer. We heard them and then managed to see six of them. The posts at the electrical area did not hold any of the usual raptors. We added White-crowned Sparrows, House Finches and Marsh Wrens here. The fields beyond were being patrolled by a Harrier and 2 coyotes.
On the way back to the cars we spotted the Western Meadowlark that we had seen briefly earlier. We watched it fly to various spots in the field but it was impossible to locate each time it landed. On the walk back we saw more of the same birds – especially Yellow Rumps and Eagles. Another Anna’s Hummingbird put on a display – shimmering in the sunshine.
Just after leaving the parking area some of us had a good view of a Kestrel sitting on a powerline.
