Delta Naturalists Outing to Boundary Bay Dyke at 64th, December 31, 2025

PHOTO: Ruby-crowned Kinglet by Chris McVittie…..

After driving through a bit of fog while making our way to the foot of 64th St, we stepped onto the dyke with clear views of the bay and surrounding areas. Our group was Bruce, Nicki, Chris, Pat, Susan, Doug and Christine.

After snapping a few photos of the Bald Eagles perched in a tree at the entrance to the dyke we scanned around for the recently seen Say’s Phoebe but didn’t locate it. We decided to head east toward 72nd St. In the distance with the incoming tide we could see a large Dunlin murmuration, a lone Trumpeter Swan and in the bushes along the dyke, several Yellow-rumped Warblers were making themselves seen and heard. Anna’s Hummingbirds were flitting around along with the usual assortment of sparrows and finches, some eating the crab-apples in the bushes lining the dyke. We got a brief look at a Virginia Rail here as well.

Further down the trail we reached the ponds where we found a lone Pied-billed Grebe, many American Wigeon, a few Eurasian Wigeon, Mallards, Northern Pintails, Northern Shovelers, Green-winged Teal, American Coots and Buffleheads. On the way back we added both Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, a preening Pacific Wren, and an Orange-crowned Warbler.

After Bruce and I left, Chris was able to locate the Say’s Phoebe.  We had a total of 38 species plus the Phoebe. A most enjoyable outing.
