PHOTO: Spotted Towhee & House Finch by Susan Gemeinhardt….
Four of us gathered at the foot of 104th Street this morning at 9 am: Lindly, Pat, Susan and me. The weather was cool and overcast but we were lucky to have no rain all morning. The tide was high, right up to the dyke, and huge rafts of duck were offshore. They were predominantly American Wigeon, but with some Northern Pintail among them. A pair of Bald Eagles were calling nearby, and we saw 6 in total.
We walked eastward along the dyke, towards the pump station. Three Trumpeter Swans and a number of juvenile Glaucous-winged Gulls flew over during our walk. Several Great Blue Herons were standing around in ditches and field margins. In the bushes and blackberry tangles along the field margins and dyke edge we saw small groups of Golden-crowned and White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows and House Finches. There were also a couple of Spotted Towhees and American Robins. A flock of Eurasian Starlings flew past.
On the return walk, some of the ducks had come closer, giving better views. There was a Northern Shoveler and a group of Green-winged Teal.
Despite the cold, misty weather, we had a lovely 2 hr 40 min walk along the dyke, and Pat and Susan took lots of photos.
