Twelve Delta Nats met at Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley – Dottie, Terry, Lee, Bob, Mike, Freddie, Lidia, Dorothy, Christine, Bruce, Nicki and Connie.

A Townsend’s Chipmunk entertained us at the parking lot before we started our usual clockwise route along the Little River Loop trail. There were Robins, Juncos, Towhees and Chickadees. There was no sign of ducks in the river but there were many small fish – possibly Stickleback. At the end of the bridge we came to a barricade. We learned that this part of the trail will be closed for 3 months while the boardwalk is replaced. So we went back to the other half of the Little River Loop trail and continued up the hill to the pond. Park staff would not let us go to the Listening Bridge which is part of the boardwalk replacement project.

Along the way we heard and/or saw Steller’s Jays, Purple Finches, Yellow Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Willow Flycatchers, Western Wood-Pewees, Western Flycatchers, Cedar Waxwings, Song Sparrows, Swainson’s Thrush and Bewick’s Wren. We had good views of a Brown Creeper and two Black-headed Grosbeaks. At the pond we tried to pick out the Bullfrogs submerged in the weeds. The dragonflies would not land for photos.

We took a detour along the shady Ravine Trail. Here we added a pair of Anna’s Hummingbirds and a Barn Swallow. Bees were active in a sunny patch between the trails. As usual iNaturalist helped identify them. Our route back to the cars was along the Vine Maple Trail where we heard and/or saw some of the same birds. Luckily most of our walk had been in the shade on this very warm day.
