Just five Delta Nats showed up for this week’s Wednesday outing: David, Colin and Stephanie, Freddie and Claude. According to Merlin, the walk from the car parking area should have resulted in about a dozen species, but a single Hutton’s Vireo was the only bird actually seen by any of us. Too much greenery! The ball park had about a dozen Robins looking for worms, and some Towhees calling from the sidelines, but was otherwise quiet.
We continued past the horse grounds and over the bridge, where we got a brief look at a pair of Western Tanagers, some Juncos and more Spotted Towhees in the residential area. We spent a good deal of time looking for one or the other of a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers that were continually calling from frustratingly near the path, but which we never did manage to find. We carried on down to the lower trail and out to Colebrook Road. Highlights were three or four Black-headed Grosbeaks, some Cedar Waxwings and a flycatcher that Merlin identified for us as Willow Flycatcher.
The walk back to the cars was uneventful and we finished early at about 11:30. Merlin claimed to have heard close to 40 species, but we could only confirm 26 in our eBird report.
