PHOTO: Juvenile Barred Owl by Bob Winston…..
A quartet of birders met at Joe Brown Park (Alan, Lee, Dottie and Bob) to see what June would provide at this hot spot. The day was very nice, warm and a light breeze. The Jim Arnold trail was getting overgrown thus hard to see the birds but there was a lot of song. The usual suspects, Chickadee, Robins, Towhees, were joined by Western Flycatchers and a Barred Owl still with fuzzy Owlet feathers in adult size. Near the baseball diamond we heard both Warbling and Hutton’s Vireos. We heard the Warbling Vireo multiple places – finally to see one while searching for a Orange-crowned Warbler.
Liz and the new puppy Penny made a cameo appearance to soak up all the pets they could (Penny that is). Several Black-headed Grosbeaks were seen and heard. High over the dog park Alan saw a Black Swift. Nice treat.
Heading down to Colebrook Road we found Willow Flycatchers, Common Yellowthroat and Rufous Hummingbirds. Retracing our steps back to the top of the park we added several more birds – Bewick’s Wren, Cedar Waxwing, Cowbirds and Eagles. We finished after 3 hours with 30 species.
