PHOTO: Anna’s Hummingbird on Nest by Christine Gaio…

Ten DNCBers met at Ladner Harbour Park – Dorothy, Lorna, Christine, Mike, Jim, Susan, Dottie, Bob, Terry and Roger. We started at Shirley’s Walk where we watched Marsh Wrens and Black-capped Chickadees gather fluff from the cattails. We also saw Red-winged Blackbirds, Robins, Song Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, Eagles, Towhees and Mallards.
Back out at the road we tried unsuccessfully to look for Pied-billed Grebes and a Kingfisher. We did see a rabbit, a Heron, Canada Geese, American Goldfinch, Song Sparrows, House Sparrows, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows and Starlings. On the shore on the other side of the waterway a Mute Swan was sitting on a nest.
From the viewpoint we only saw Mallards. On the way back we saw more Marsh Wrens on the cattails. But the woods yielded very few birds. Back near the picnic shelter a Bewick’s Wren was singing from a treetop. Some California Darner Dragonflies posed for photos on Salmonberry blossoms.
Christine then took us to Hawthorne Grove Park on Arthur Drive, beside Kirkland House. This is a delightful little park with a water feature and gardens. There is an active Eagle nest and an Anna’s Hummingbird nest. We also saw Killdeer, White-crowned Sparrows, Bushtits, Robins, Starlings, Song Sparrows, Towhees, Goldfinch, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, Mallards and Herons. We heard but did not see Common Yellowthroats. Christine took us into the basement of Kirkland House to see the model railway display.
