4 Delta Nats met at the 16th Avenue entrance to Langley’s Campbell Valley Regional Park – Jim, Jacquie, John and Terry. We had expected another very hot day, but it was cloudy and cool.

In the parking area were Juncos, Towhees and a Robin with worms. The first part of the trail was very quiet. There were no ducks in the water below the bridge. Finally we were greeted by a mixed flock of Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees that followed us for awhile. There were several Song Sparrows including some juveniles that did not know that they were supposed to keep a safe distance from people. We heard, and finally saw, a Willow Flycatcher and a Swainson’s Thrush. A noisy Steller’s Jay scolded from a stump. A Downy Woodpecker was busy looking for bugs in trees near the trail. Photos showed that a longer billed Hairy Woodpecker was also active in the same area. A Yellow Warbler appeared briefly. We heard but did not see Black-headed Grosbeaks. They usually entertain us at the listening bridge. A Great Blue Heron flew over and Cedar Waxwings were sitting on treetops. It was very quiet on the way up the hill. There were Bullfrogs in the pond. On the way back to the cars we had a view of a Brown Creeper creeping up a tree – along with more Chickadees, Towhees, Robins, Juncos and a Cedar Waxwing.

It was nice to be out on this coolish morning and we managed to see or hear 25 bird species. It was too cool for the usual damselflies and dragonflies but there were a few bees. As usual in this park we saw native Douglas Squirrels and invasive Eastern Gray Squirrels and a Townsend’s Chipmunk.
