Five birders met at Terra Nova Park in Richmond – John, Margaret, Mike, Lorna and Terry. Along the shore were Mallards, American Wigeon and Green-winged Teal. Robins and Red-winged Blackbirds were in the surrounding trees.
After admiring the impressive adventure playground we soon added Northern Flickers, American Crows, Spotted Towhees, Black-capped Chickadees, Golden-crowned Kinglet and a Bald Eagle. Tree Swallows were zooming around and making use of the fancy new nest boxes.
There were no ducks on the pond, but there was one American Coot. A flock of American Goldfinches was feeding on alder seeds. There were recent beaver cuttings, but no sign of where the beavers were using the branches. After crossing Westminster Highway, we added Anna’s Hummingbirds, Dark-eyed Juncos, Golden-crowned Sparrows and European Starlings. A small hawk whizzed past – probably a Peregrine.
Back at the dyke there was a female Hooded Merganser in the ditch with a pair of Mallards. A Red-tailed Hawk posed nicely for photos. Out on the foreshore we saw Eagles and Herons in the distance. Completing our loop to the cars we ended another enjoyable outing on a lovely spring morning.
