Twelve birders met at Burnaby Lake – Jacquie, Margaret, Bob, Dottie, Deems, Grant, Lorna, Lidia, Herb, Terry, Mike and Roger. Although we passed through showers on the drive, there was no rain in the park. In fact the sun came out as we walked the trails. Near the Nature House were Black-capped Chickadees, Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, Dark-eyed Juncos and an Anna’s Hummingbird.

Along the spit were a large number of ducks and other birds that were used to being fed and so seemed very tame. These included Wood Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail, Mallards, American Coots, Red-winged Blackbirds, Glaucous-winged Gulls and a Ring-billed Gull. Across the lake were Canada Geese, Gadwall, Bufflehead, a Double-crested Cormorant drying its wings, and beaver lodges. There were recent beaver cuttings along the spit.

On our usual route to the dam on the Brunette River we added Golden and Ruby-crownrd Kinglets, American Robin, Varied Thrush, Purple Finch, Pacific Wren, Fox Sparrow, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Northern Flicker, Hooded Merganser and Great Blue Heron. There were several of both species of squirrel – the native Douglas Squirrel and the introduced Eastern Grey Squirrel. We looked in vain for Dippers below the dam, but Grant did see a Kingfisher there. On the way back we noticed some small white mushrooms that iNaturalist idenified as Lichenomphalia umbellifera (Lichen Agaric).
