18 DNCBers met at Jericho Beach Park in Vancouver on a smoky, but very pleasant fall day – Margaret, Noreen, Kirsten, Liz, Lynne, Lidia, Brian, Chris, Lorna, Warren, David, Mike, Louise, Lorraine, Glen, Jonathan, Lori and Terry. The city was barely visible in the smoke.

In the bay were several huge cargo ships, a swimmer, a paddle boarder, a small flock of American Wigeon, gulls, 2 Horned Grebes and a Pelagic Cormorant.

The pond was overgrown with bulrushes, but in the open areas were Mallards, American Wigeon and a Great Blue Heron. A Merlin flew over disturbing some small birds, possibly Yellow-rumped Warblers. Beside the bridge is a beaver dam and a huge beaver lodge. There were recent beaver cuttings in the area.

Along the paths were Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows, White-crowned & Golden-crowned Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, American Goldfinches, House Finches, Black-capped Chickadees, American Robins, Anna’s Hummingbirds, Crows, Red-winged Blackbirds, a Pacific Wren and a Northern Flicker.

A Bald Eagle flew over, and several more herons were spotted high up in the trees. There were several domestic rabbits, Eastern Grey Squirrels and Woolly Bear Caterpillars along the way. These caterpillars can survive the winter and eventually become small, short-lived Isabella Tiger Moths. A flock of Canada Geese included a smaller Cackling Goose.

David’s Jericho ebird list has 28 species.

Some of the group decided to drive to Camosun Bog at Camosun Street and 19th Avenue. There is a short boardwalk loop trail through the forest and bog plants. We were greeted by two noisy Steller’s Jays which soon disappeared. A Pacific Wren kept appearing and disappearing, but did allow some photographs. Some got a brief view of a White-throated Sparrow. Brian’s ebird list has 14 species.
