Twelve DNCBers met at Jackman Wetlands on 272nd St in Langley. We were pleased to see New Yorkers Carolyn and Bill who are once again staying in Point Roberts. The others were David, Noreen, Lidia, John, Lindly, Jacquie, Lee, Dottie, Bob, Margaret, Mike and Terry.
Jackman Wetlands, a former landfill site, now has paths, ponds and an 18 hole disc golf course. Players use thick, heavy, Frisbee-like discs and aim for chain baskets as targets.
Although there was little shade, it was not uncomfortably hot. But as with the past few weeks, the birds were few and far between. However, a real highlight was the very nice variety of dragonflies – and some even stayed still for photos. Tansy and many other flowers were in bloom. We also saw a rabbit, a garter snake and some tree frogs.
The birds included Cedar Waxwings, Willow Flycatchers, Chickadees, Robins, Barn Swallows, Bewick’s Wrens, Northern Flicker, Common Yellowthroat, and Red-breasted Nuthatch. In the ponds were Mallards, Gadwall, Wood Ducks, female and juvenile Hooded Mergansers, a Killdeer and a Pied-billed Grebe family.
This was a new destination for many, and another very pleasant outing.
