The 2022-30B Outing to Maplewood Flats was cancelled, so a few DNCB members arranged to meet for an “unofficial” Outing to new destination Colebrook Park in Surrey.
7 keen birders (Johnny Mac, Ken And Anne, Gabriele, Marion, Colin and Stephanie) met at 8:00am and although we took our time, we were finished and on the road by 9:55.
It was fairly cool along the forest path, on a very hot day. The birds were most active and seen along the edges, and mostly heard in the forest. Our birds were American Goldfinch, Song Sparrow, Rufous Hummingbird, White-crowned Sparrow, Cedar Waxwing, Common Yellowthroat, American Robin, Willow Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Brown Creeper, Warbling Vireo, Spotted Towhee, House Finch, Red-winged Blackbird, Pileated Woodpecker, and best of all, we were able to watch a Bewick’s Wren take an extensive dust bath on the path ahead of us.
We had one or two more birds, tentatively ID’d as a female Black-headed Grosbeak and/or Western Tanager, not for inclusion on the above list because we were uncertain as to ID.
We enjoyed the displays of Evening Primroses, Colin noticed an Eight-spotted Skimmer, Marion found a 6-spotted Ladybug but FEW BEES!! Where are the bees? We should be worried.
