Eight DNCBers met at Joe Brown Park in Surrey – Jacquie, Lee, Dottie, Bob, John, Glen, Lorna, Terry.
Several very active Yellow-rumped Warblers entertained us right at the beginning of the path. Most of them seemed to have the yellow throat of the Audubon’s population. Along the way to the equestrian area we saw Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Song Sparrows and Robins, and heard several other elusive species. We followed the sound of a tapping Downy Woodpecker and eventually had some good views of it. Then a very busy Rufous Hummingbird held our attention as he was feeding in, or collecting, spider webs.
On the path down the hill there were some very upset Robins mobbing a Red-tailed Hawk. The hawk flew off, and they quieted down. Along the way were Northern Flickers, House Finches, Hummingbirds, Eagles and White-crowned Sparrows.
As we walked along the Surrey Delta Greenway Path to Colebrook Road, we saw evidence of beaver cuttings. European Starlings were carrying bugs and worms to their nests high up in some dead trees. Tree Swallows were active, and we saw more Yellow-rumped Warblers, Flickers, Hummingbirds and another Downy Woodpecker. Yellowthroats and other warblers teased us with their songs, but would not give us good views. We did get a glimpse and a blurry photo of a Black-throated Gray Warbler. This is a very birdy park with nice spring foliage and flowers. There were even a few mushrooms and bugs.
After leaving the park, a few of us stopped briefly at Mud Bay Park. We enjoyed seeing the spring foliage, but it was very quiet birdwise.
