Eleven DNCBers met by the Second Beach swimming pool in Stanley Park – Richard, Kirsten, Debbi, Jacquie, Lee, Roger, Mike, Lorna, Pat, Manli, Terry.

The new traffic pattern in Stanley Park made finding our parking lot a bit confusing.  Although the seawall is partially closed for repairs, we were able to follow it part way.  We then did our usual circuit of Lost Lagoon.  We were very lucky with the weather.  The rain started just as we returned to our cars at Second Beach.  Five of us then drove to Beaver Lake for a damp walk.  And stopped briefly at Brockton Point in heavy rain.

From Second Beach we saw Barrow’s Goldeneye, Surf Scoters, Red-breasted Mergansers, Bufflehead, Scaup, Surf Scoters, Mallards, Canada Geese, Horned Grebes, Cormorants and a Common Loon.  Pelagic Cormorants were showing the white flanks of their breeding plumage.

Although there were large numbers of Wood Ducks and Mallards in Lost Lagoon, there were none of the other ducks that we usually see there.  The otters and raccoons did not put in appearance either.

Beaver Lake had large numbers of Mallards and Wood Ducks, with fewer Bufflehead, Pintail and Green-winged Teal.  About a dozen Chestnut-backed Chickadees came for Roger’s bird seed.  They are always reliable here.  The Wood Ducks came running for some of it too.  The brief stop in the rain at Brockton Point did not produce any alcids, but there were some other birds in the distance.
