13 people met at 8am, and we walked to the beach. There was a group of shorebirds that we had trouble identifying. Photos showed them to be Baird’s Sandpipers. Caspian Terns were noisily fighting over a small fish.
Birds seen on the walk to the gate to the inner ponds included American Goldfinches, Red-winged Blackbirds, Cedar Waxwings and Yellow Warblers. There was a padlock on the gate so we walked along the fence to the road and to the other gate. Walking along the fence at a level higher than the road gave us good views of shorebirds in the ponds and sparrows, goldfinches, and warblers inside the fence.
It was too difficult to get down to the road at the gate, so we returned to the cars and drove back to the gate. The usual combination worked on that gate, so we were able to get closer to the shorebirds – Baird’s, Pectoral & Western Sandpipers, Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, a Long-billed Dowitcher in breeding plumage, and 2 Red-necked Phalaropes.
