It was an overcast day, which frustrated some photographers, but it didn’t slow down the chat-fest among the 10 people on our walk in Burnaby Lake Park. The 10 were Jonathan and Lorraine, Brian and Louise, Roger M, Mike B, Lorna, Pat, Janet H and Glen.

There were a lot of Wood Ducks, young and adults, posing in the trees at the start of the boardwalk into the lake, and we eventually located the Mandarin male in eclipse plumage. The lake was over-grown with lily pads but the open water showed gulls, Canada Geese, Mallards and Wood Ducks. Some saw a Pied-billed Grebe. There were Dowitchers (of some kind) lurking on the shore opposite the walkway. A fine selection of Red-winged Blackbirds were being hand-fed.

We decided to take the eastbound trail to the dam in search of the American Dipper – but it was not seen, nor the Kingfisher, nor any salmon in the fish ladder, nor turtles in the area. A Great Blue Heron gave us nice poses.

The woods along the trail to the dam and back to the Nature House were fairly quiet – Douglas Squirrels, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers and Flickers, Cedar Waxwings, Finches (House, Purple and Gold), Towhee, Sparrows, Chickadees, some yellow possible Warblers, and a number of sounds that none of our bird ID apps could identify by sound. Louise blew up a Puffball by stomping on it. Roger spent his time saving slugs from being squished. Lorraine saw a Mink.
