DNCB Outing No. 2021-31 to Surrey Bend Regional Park on August 3, 2021

12 people signed up for our outing to Surrey Bend on Tuesday August 3 – and no one signed up for Wednesday. The 12 were Chris, Jim, Pat, Janet, Marion, Lidia, David, Noreen, Kirsten, Gabriele, Margaretha and Glen. We contemplated forming 2 groups of 6, but in the end we mixed it all up as one
group.

Kirsten’s suggestion of walking the route in reverse order was widely accepted as it got us through the long hot dry part of the route before the sun beat down too heavily. That left the mosquito territory till the end, and we probably went through that quite quickly doing more chatting than birding.

It was a warm sunny day for us and for the birds -we could see many of them flitting around in the tree tops but not giving us very good looks. There seemed to be a Willow Flycatcher every 30 meters, though we only managed to see one or two.

Even the Fraser River had nothing to offer – no herons, no gulls, no cormorants or ducks! We did a lot of birding by ear, and we hope the photogs managed to catch some of the variety. There was great excitement when we came upon a snake on the road, or a grasshopper, or a vulture some quarter mile off in the sky.

David kept an eBird list and the results are shown below.
