There were 9 people on Tuesday – Liz, Roger, Mike, Jim, Glen, Pat, Johnny Mac, Kirsten, Terry. We walked through Joe Brown Park and down the Surrey Delta Greenway to Colebrook Road and back. Highlights were Black-headed Grosbeaks, Willow Flycatchers, Swainson’s Thrush, Barred Owl and wildflowers.
On Monday the Barred Owl was seen near the pedestrian bridge all day. We looked there, but did not see it. On the way out we heard some very agitated robins. They were harassing the owl, and we saw it fly. Roger went back to that spot in the evening and got a great photo of two Barred Owls.
Afterwards 3 of us made a brief stop at Mud Bay Park. We did not see any birds, but as usual it was a good spot to photograph insects. There were Red Soldier Beetles and an Echo Azure butterfly. Like many beetles, Red Soldier Beetles are pollinators. The adults feed on aphids, pollen, and nectar. The larvae prey on ground-dwelling invertebrates, such as slugs and snails.
