DNCB Outing No. 2021-26 to Little Campbell River Fish Hatchery on June 29, 2021

Five DNCBers met at the Little Campbell River Fish Hatchery in Surrey (Johnny Mac, Lidia, Chris, Roger M and Terry). Although the sign said that it was open to the public from dawn to dusk, the gate was closed. We scrambled to find parking on the roadside. There was a very noisy Common Yellowthroat beside the cars, but we could not find him for a photo. Some Cedar Waxwings did show themselves. When we walked to the gate we found that it was not locked. So we opened it and drove in after all.

Near the beginning of our walk we saw House Sparrows, Robins, a Flicker, and Steller’s Jays. On the roof of one of the shelters was a nest of European Paper Wasps. At the river were a Mallard with ducklings, Red-eared Slider Turtles, bullfrogs and dragonflies. On the path through the forest we added a Black-headed Grosbeak, American Goldfinches, Willow Flycatchers, hummingbirds, Bushtits, Song Sparrows.and Towhees.

Back at the ponds were more dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. In the parking area were Savannah Sparrows and a Black-tailed Deer. At the entrance, the Common Yellowthroat did show himself, and a Belted Kingfisher flew by.
