Delta Naturalists Society

Six participants (John & Kay, Lorna, Val, Hans-Ulf and me) spent an enjoyable morning at a new destination for all of us, Watershed Park in North Delta.  This large forest park along the North Delta escarpment is managed by Delta Corporation. There are many well-groomed trails (for people, horses and mountain bikes) among the tall, second-growth trees, mostly Western Red Cedar, Hemlock and Douglas Fir. We heard lots of singing birds and were able to get good views of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creepers, Winter Wren, Downy Woodpeckers and many of the common birds such as, Dark-eyed Juncos, Black-capped Chickadees, American Robins, Song Sparrows and Spotted Towhees. A male Northern Harrier flew over as did a few Bald Eagles; two active eagle’s nests are in the Park. A local resident advised that a Black Bear had been seen in the Park, but we suspect that was not in the recent past. Although we did not see a lot of bird species, this is good habitat for Warblers, Thrushes and other woodland birds.  Nonetheless, a very pleasant morning with some almost-brilliant conversation.
